140.2…Soaked Sprinter
Track practice was…wet. It rained the entire time. I guess you could say it was refreshing?
When we arrived for our half marathon track practice, we were told we’d be running “fartleks.” Excuse me? That sounds….interesting.
According to Wikipedia:
Fartlek, which means "speed play" in Swedish, is a form of interval training which puts stress on the whole aerobic energy system due to the continuous nature of the exercise. The difference between this type of training and continuous training is that the intensity or speed of the exercise varies, meaning that aerobic and anaerobic systems can be put under stress. It differs from traditional interval training in that it is unstructured; intensity and/or speed can be varied whenever the athlete wishes. Most fartlek sessions last a minimum of 45 minutes and can vary from aerobic walking to anaerobic sprinting. Fartlek training is generally associated with running, but can include almost any kind of exercise.
The coach would blow the whistle and we’d jog slowly. He’d blow the whistle again and we’d run a lot faster until the whistle blew again. We didn’t know how long each interval would be or how many.
I wasn’t as tired as usual. Maybe it was that I didn’t eat before? It didn’t feel as hard. I was soaked by the time I was done though. I had the heater blowing full blast all the way home.
When I got home I made a peanut butter sandwich and went to bed.
This morning I rolled with cereal for breakfast: Special K Vanilla Almond cereal with almond milk and a side of strawberries:
I took the kids to school and went on a 4 mile run. The first two miles sucked for whatever reason and then I flew after that:
Mile 1 – 10:30
Mile 2 – 10:19
Mile 3 – 9:37
Mile 4 – 9:15
I came home to change and then went to the mall for some shopping. I stopped at Nordstrom for lunch. I had my favorite sandwich there: the roasted turkey.
I haven’t been shopping in awhile (too busy blogging!) and wanted to get some new stuff for some events coming up. I came up with nothing. I wasn’t really impressed with anything I saw. :(
I left the mall to get some stuff at Target, picked up my daughter and came home. I need to go pick up my son from a playdate and then I’m grabbing sushi with a friend tonight. YES!
Have you been shopping lately? Find anything good?
Ever run in the rain? :)
When I coached high school track, the girls loved fartleks....they can be one tough workout! I am off to go shopping this weekend...I haven't been in forever! I need a dress for a wedding!
ReplyDeleteThe roasted turkey sandwich looks awesome! I always love/hate when I come home empty handed from shopping... i love not having spent money but hate that I didnt find anything fun to spend money on. haha. such is life! =)

Oooh, I love Nordstrom's cafe. How did you not walk out of there with something from the bakery? Their cookies / bars / everything is delicious!
ReplyDeleteI went shopping over the weekend for new jean shorts. Every single pair I owned from years past were all too big. Breastfeeding slims me down like you wouldn't believe.
I went to Nordstroms, Macys, Express and Limited on Tuesday and came home completely empty handed. I don't know what was up with that.
ReplyDeleteI hate being cold and wet, so I haven't run in the rain. Luckily, it rarely rains in AZ!
I wouldn't say that your first two miles sucked...its good to get in a good warm up and its awesome you were able to pick up your pace the last two miles. Usually thats harder to do for a lot of people!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first heard the word fartlek, I was like whaa?!
i NEVER run in the rain...i'm way too wimpy for that :)
ReplyDeletewe used to do fartleks all the time in college...i like the word much more than what they actually are!
Fartleks! That makes me laugh b/c I still have a five year old living inside me. :) I haven't been shopping in a while...not since January when I got a bra and a really cute top on sale that was ruched (sp?) down the center in the front. Sexay! I'm not a fashionista or I'd def go more often.
ReplyDeleteFartlecks are such an intense workout! I used to have to do them at soccer practice all the time! And I actually really like running in the rain (well playing soccer in the rain is more fun I think!) :)
ReplyDeleteI wonder who made up the word fartlek? And what were they thinking? I haven't been shopping since Christmas - I'm definitely overdue! Hope you have a great weekend!
